Rash 0.6.0 packages an SVG animation studio and local MCP workspace

Rash, an open source browser SVG animation studio, is now on npm as @ruv/rash 0.6.0. One command serves the Studio on localhost, and a second starts a local MCP server with seven project tools.

What changed

Rash is an open source SVG animation studio. Its README describes a browser editor with a stage, layers, tools, properties and a frame-based timeline, in the style of classic Flash. Scripts run in a bounded Rust/WebAssembly interpreter in a worker.

PR #13, merged on October 13 at 04:03:42Z, prepared the package. At 04:05:49Z @ruv/rash 0.6.0 was published to npm. Its gitHead is exactly the merge commit 099dc568. The registry also lists a 0.0.0-stage placeholder published two minutes earlier, so 0.6.0 is the first real release on npm. It is not a GitHub release.

The package exposes two commands: rash, which serves the complete Studio from the package on 127.0.0.1:4173 by default, and rash-mcp, the local MCP server. The pinned README marks the project as experimental.

What is in 0.6.0

  • Authoring: draw vectors, edit text, set properties and add timeline keyframes. Shared symbols have their own nested timelines and Loop, Play once or Single frame instances. A definition edit updates every instance.
  • Exports: animated SVG, GIF, PNG, raster PDF, self-contained animated HTML, project JSON and browser-supported MP4. Per the README, PDF exports frame zero as a raster image, and MP4 is a real-time browser recording that unsupported browsers refuse with an explicit error.
  • Scripting: a documented ActionScript-inspired subset, not complete ActionScript or Flash API compatibility. Existing SWF files play through a separate, optional Ruffle player with its own upstream limits.
  • The tarball we downloaded matches the registry's SHA-512 integrity value and holds 144 files. It requires Node 22 or later.

Timeline features merged after this release, from PR #14 to PR #22, are not in npm 0.6.0. They include blank keyframes, frame labels, onion skin, trajectory dragging and spatial Bezier motion paths.

The local MCP workspace

rash mcp starts an MCP server over standard input and output for one local user. Projects are stored in ~/.rash/projects, or in an absolute directory set with RASH_MCP_STORE. The user guide limits the store to 100 projects, 100 MB in total and 5 MB per project.

  • rash_project_create, rash_project_list and rash_project_get create, list and read projects.
  • rash_project_update and rash_project_delete only succeed when expectedRevision matches the last read. After a conflict, read again and reconcile instead of overwriting.
  • rash_render and rash_export work on an exact revision. Export formats are json, svg, animated-svg and embed. GIF, MP4, PNG and PDF stay in the browser.

The local MCP files, the Studio's browser autosave and the authenticated hosted workspace are three separate stores. Browser projects do not appear in the MCP store automatically. Use project JSON to move work between them. The hosted workspace requires sign-in and is not public.

Get started

Use Node 22 or later. These commands come from the packaged CLI and README. The first prints Rash 0.6.0 and the Studio and MCP usage. The second serves the Studio at http://127.0.0.1:4173. The third starts the local MCP server on standard input and output.

Documentation and artifact verified only. The newsroom did not install the package, run these commands, open the Studio from npm or connect an AI host.

npx @ruv/rash@0.6.0 --help
npx @ruv/rash@0.6.0
npx @ruv/rash@0.6.0 mcp

To try the editor without installing anything, open the public demo at ruvnet.github.io/Rash. The user guide documents a Claude Code plugin through /plugin marketplace add ruvnet/Rash and /plugin install rash@rash-tools. Those commands install the repository's current plugin, which may be newer than npm 0.6.0. The guide says to validate it against your Claude host version.

Use it today

Input: an SVG animation idea. Workflow: in the Studio, add a layer, set two keyframes on the timeline, export animated SVG, and download the project JSON. Output: a portable SVG for a web page, and an editable JSON file that you can reopen later or hand to the local MCP store.

Experimental commentary — acceptance test

One idea is to let an MCP client draft animations in the local store while a person refines them in the Studio. Acceptance: create a project with rash_project_create, export it as json, import it into the Studio, edit a keyframe, export SVG, and confirm that a stale expectedRevision update is refused. Limitation: the user guide states that automated protocol tests do not establish a live Claude or ChatGPT host session, and the newsroom has tested neither.

Limits and verification

Draft history: originally prepared for the unpublished October 13 candidate and carried in the unpublished October 19 candidate; intended for first publication with the October 27 candidate. Source event and documentation verification dates are unchanged.

  • The maintainers report 184 passing tests and a clean tarball install in PR #13. Those results are theirs. The newsroom did not run them.
  • No full Flash, ActionScript or After Effects parity, no autonomous learning and no live AI host acceptance is claimed.
  • Repository changes after 099dc568 are not in this package.
